HOW DID I DO AT FOLLOWING THROUGH?

PART THREE: Youth Engagement and Retention

When I wrote my platform in 2022, I said the we needed a “Launch Pad” like they have in Hanover.  Little did I know that Councilor Myette and Kenny Kilday had already formed a non profit to do a “Launch Pad” in Saugeen Shores.  These guys had a vision and created “Saugeen Sparks Training Centre.”  SPARK, as it is known, has grown into a an organization with an executive director and 2 part time employees and several volunteer teachers.

I joined SPARK in 2023 as a night school electrical teacher.  I have taught six 6 week courses so far, 2 each year.  SPARKs focus is to help adults get into the skiller trades, and many participants are now apprentices!

The Town of Saugeen Shores gave start up  money to Spark, and a smaller amount the next year.  Although I was volunteer, out of caution, I declared a conflict of interest and did not participate in the decision.

Furthermore, the Town lobbied the David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, at the 2025 AMO conference (Association of Municipalites of Ontario).  I was in the delegation and told the minister about the good work of SPARK and asked for some grant money for them.  We were not successful that day, but SPARK applied for a grant from the ministry this spring, and they were successful. SPARK now has stable funding for the next 2 years.

The vision of Councilor Myette and Kenny Kilday has become a force for good in Saugeen Shores.  I am glad that the Town supported them with start up funds, and that I was able to lobby for them, and teach as well.  Learn more about https://saugeensparkscentre.com .

As Vice Deputy mayor I will continue to support SPARK as I can, in council and volunteering.

As Vice Deputy Mayor, I will continue to support education,  and look for additional ways to work co-operatively to support groups that will help to promoting careers in Saugeen Shores and engage and guide our youth.
