EXPERIENCE AND LEADERSHIP
Let's talk about experience and leadership.
I have had a couple different careers; carpentry and teaching.
I finished my carpentry apprenticeship and I began working for a house framing company as a carpenter on the crew. My boss liked my work ethic and made me a sub foreman. The following year I was foreman with my own crew.
From there, I went to another company where I started as a foreman. Before long I was a supervisor, being responsible for managing my crew and the sub trades.
After a couple of years I started my own home building business.
When I was self-employed I hired lots of people. I advanced people through the ranks from labourer to apprentice to carpenter to foreman.
I never once hired a foreman or supervisor who had never worked in construction crew before.
Why? Because experience matters. And there is only one way to get it, earning it.
Someone running for a councillor position without previous experience is very acceptable. We all have to start somewhere, myself included.
I have 3 terms of municipal experience. I have a proven track record. I am qualified to run for a mayoral position; vice deputy mayor.
If you want to run my carpentry crew, show me you can be a carpenter on the crew first.
In education, you must be a teacher before you can be the principal.
If you want to be mayor, should you be a councillor first?
Experience is earned. Experience counts. Choose wisely.
