MY STORY

I’m Bud Halpin. My life has been rich in experience and action, from construction and small business to teaching, community service, and municipal government.

​

Family has also been an important part of my story. I’ve been married to my wife, Jenny, for 39 years, and together we have four adult children, all of whom are married/partnered.

​

The variety of experiences in my life has shaped who I am and the way I serve my community.

Childhood

  • I was brought up on a small hobby farm in Bruce County.

  • In grade school and high school I worked on neighbouring farms. 

  • Growing up on farm and working on farms gave a sense ofresponsibility and a work ethic that have stayed with me to this day.

Education

Volunteering

Past

  • Philippines, Primary Healthcare, and carpentry projects.
    Belize and Guatemala, volunteering at the hospital, mobile medical clinics in remote villages and refugee camps. 

  • My strengths and major impacts were doing construction and agricultural projects in refugee camps.

  • As a father of four I volunteered as a manager, trainer, and coach for Chesley minor hockey and soccer.


Present

  • Teaching woodworking classes at Community living 

  • Board member of Saugeen Sparks Training Centre

  • Teaching Introductory Electrical night school for adults at Spark

Self Emlpoyment

  • Halpin Brothers Construction, building homes and other buildings in Chesley and the surrounding area. 

  • Owning two Cottage Parks in Port Elgin, 2004-2017

  • I helped my son open and operate a Pita Shop in Port Elgin for 2 years. 

  • I currently have one rental property

Council Experience

  • Chesley Town Council in 1994, where my portfolio included Public Works, Landfill, and Wastewater. 

  • Arran Elderslie PUC (Public Utilities Commission), which manages the drinking water for Chesley and the electrical infrastructure for Chesley, Tara, and Paisley.  

  • Councillor for Port Elgin Ward, 2022-26


My council appointments include:

  • 4 years on the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authourity

  • 4 years on the Saugeen Rail Trail Association

  • 2 years on the Heritage committee

  • Sitting on the Environmental Ad Hoc Committee

The wide variety of my experiences has shaped my views and make me a more rounded and grounded person. 

I have experience in small business, the tourist and restaurant business, and an understanding of our farming community. These are important and often overlooked components of the Saugeen Shores economy. 

I have considerable knowledge of infrastructure and construction.  With three terms on council, I am experienced and I have a proven record.  

Being innovative, working cooperatively and collaborating with people and groups is my strong point, and it has been demonstrated throughout my career.

As your Vice Deputy Mayor, I am looking forward to what we can accomplish together.
